“Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices.” – Harry S. Truman
Monday, May 29 is Memorial Day, an annual remembrance has been observed since the years following the Civil War. It is meant to honor the brave men and women throughout the history of our nation who have paid the ultimate price for freedom. At Mission Viejo Florist, we join our friends and neighbors in remembering, as well as in reaching out to the families who are still mourning the loss of a spouse, sibling, child, or parent. After World War I, a poem was penned that was destined to become famous. “In Flanders’ Field” told the story of the war, and mentioned the red poppies growing among the soldier’s graves. The poem inspired the tradition of wearing a red poppy in one’s lapel to honor the fallen, and red flowers continue to be considered symbolic today.
When it comes to appropriate flowers for Memorial Day’s patriotic floral arrangements, the obvious choice is red, white and blue. Popular red flowers include roses, carnations, and gerbera daisies, usually paired with white carnations or lilies. The blue florals can be blue hydrangea, blue delphinium, or blue iris.
Did You Know? Red symbolizes courage and passion; white purity; and blue, loyalty.
While the poppy is closely associated with Memorial Day, it is rarely given as a live flower. Instead, if one wants to give deeply significant patriotic floral arrangements, the gladioli is another customary choice. This dramatic flower is most often seen in memorial sprays. Named after the storied Roman gladiators and shaped like a sword, the gladiolus bloom represents valor, integrity, and strength of character. It is the perfect tribute for Memorial Day.
Whether you wish to send a bouquet to the family of a fallen soldier – or are looking to decorate a gravesite with a floral wreath or cross – the experts at Mission Viejo Florist are honored and privileged to assist.
