On August 27, you have the perfect opportunity to set aside all your obligations and to do whatever you please. This is the spirit behind “Just Because Day”, a whimsical observance which was the brainchild of Joseph J. Goodwin from California. Goodwin created the holiday approximately 50 years ago, with the intent having a day to really enjoy life and family. He marked the first Just Because Day by giving his wife a transistor radio, and the tradition of spontaneous gifts “just because” not only caught on with his family, but with others who heard about the carefree custom.
There are no rules to the day – simply follow your impulse. Sing in the shower, or sing on a street corner. Sleep all day, or go for a hike in the mountains. Or perhaps you can send some beautiful flowers to someone for no reason at all.
Which floral arrangements are right for Just Because Day? Well, of course there are no rules! We recommend their favorite flowers, or a bouquet which celebrates their favorite color. If you aren’t sure of what those may be, stick with bright, cheerful flowers such as roses, lilies, daisies, and irises.
You Don’t Need a Reason: Send flowers to the waitress at your favorite lunch place, the front desk receptionist at work, or to your little sister who gets on your nerves (but you know you love her). Have a bouquet delivered to a teacher who inspired you, the boss who encouraged you, or the neighbor who smiles at you every day. Why? Just because! Remember, the original focus of the day was to celebrate our lives, our families, and taking the time to enjoy both. So be creative and have some fun. Why not?
