Grandparents Day is a special holiday with a dual purpose. The day was instituted by Congress in 1978, but the original idea for the observance came from Marian McQuade, a mother and grandmother. Her vision was to set aside time for grandparents to shares stories and history with the younger generations; and for the younger folks to have the opportunity not only to learn, but to learn to appreciate the legacy of their family.

There is no doubt about it, grandparents love their job! A recent study revealed that over 90% of grandparents freely admit to talking about their grandkids every single day – to anyone who will listen. This only makes sense, given that the relationship between grandparent and grandchild is a magical one. In fact, in the same study the older generation indicated that being a grandparent was the single most fulfilling thing they had ever experienced.

Those emotions may also explain their spending habits. Grandparents will spend over $50 billion dollars annually on the kids, and another $32 billion to help them with educational costs. If adult children suspect that their kids are far more spoiled than they ever were, they are correct.

Experts say that the extra layer of safety and security these children experience helps to ease fear and uncertainty about the world. In this regard, the original intent of Grandparents Day – to teach children about where they came from – is a great help towards helping them to become well-adjusted adults.
