This Father’s Day, many of the estimated 25 million fathers in the United States will be celebrated for their role in their children’s’ lives. Although a natural complement to Mothers’ Day, the observance for dads took many more decades to establish nationally; this fact has been attributed to the fact that many fathers’s seemed averse to receiving gifts simply for their familial status. Still, we love our dads, and we love showering them with attention. We thought it might be fun to share a few of the most fun stories about dads that we have found – in honor of every father in Mission Viejo and beyond.
George Washington, widely regarded the Father of our Country, had no biological children of his own. It is speculated that several childhood illnesses rendered him unable to have children; he did, however, legally adopt his wife Martha’s two children from a previous marriage.
A.A. Milne’s timeless classic Winnie the Pooh was created thanks to a several of his adventures with his son, Christopher Robin. This literary Dad modeled the teddy bear after a favorite plush toy of his son’s, although in reality it was named Edward. They often spent time at the London Zoo for father-son outings and visited a bear named Winnie. “Pooh” was the name of Christopher’s pet swan.
Frank Sinatra was the dad of the year when his collaboration with daughter Nancy – 1967’s “Something Stupid” – was and continues to be the only father/daughter recording ever to hit #1 on the Billboard charts.
Rick Hoyt, who has cerebral palsy, has completed hundreds of marathons and triathlons thanks to his father, Rick, who pushes, pulls and powers through every race in dedication to his son. They ran their first five-mile race together when Rick was in high school. When they were done, Rick told hid father – “Dad, when we were running, it felt like I wasn’t disabled anymore!”
